Saint-Honorat, Isle of Snakes
Accordingto legend.when St Honorat landed on the isletthat bears his name in 375 he found it swarming with noxious snakes and prayed to be delivered of them. They immediately dropped dead, but the stench ofthe cadavers was so hideous that Honorat climbed a palm tree and prayed again, asking for the bodies to be washed away God obliged again, and in memory the symbol ofthe island becametwo palm trees intertwined with a snake.<br />
St Honorat shares with Jean Cassien of St-Victor in Marseillethe distinction of introducing monasticism to France. The island became a beacon of light and learning in the Dark Ages; by the 7th century the monastery of St-Honorat had 4,000 monks, and 100 priories and lordships on the mainland (including Cannes, which belonged to the monastery until 1788). Its alumni numbered 20 saints, including St Patrick, who, before going to Ireland, trained hereand picked upsometipson dealing with pesky snakes. The monastery was also a big boon to locai sinners: a journey to St-Honorat could earn a pilgrim an indulgenceequal to a journey
