In 1834 the 3,000 fisherfolk and farmers of Cannes were going about their business when Lord Brougham, retired lord chancellor, and his ailing daughter, stuck in the village because a cholera epidemie in France had closed the border with Savoy, checked into its one and only hotel. As they waited, Lord Brougham was so seduced by the climate and scenery that he built a villa, where he subsequently spent every winter. English milords and the tsar's family played follow my leader and flocked down to build their own villas nearby.'Menton's dowdy Monte's brass. Nice is rowdy. Cannes is class!'was the byword of the 1920s heyday. Less enthusiastic commentators mention the dust, the bad roads, the uncontrolled building and the turds bobbing in the sea. If nothing else, the French Riviera proper ends with a bang at Cannes.<br /> |
